Improve Reading Comprehension: SQRRR Method Explained

Retain more when reading

Published on July 1, 2026

Passively reading your textbook is one of the least effective study methods. The SQ3R method transforms reading into active learning that increases comprehension and retention.

SQ3R Method Breakdown

**Survey:** Skim the chapter

  • Read titles, headings, and summaries
  • Look at images and captions
  • Identify main topics
  • Takes 5-10 minutes

  • **Question:** Create questions about the material

  • Turn headings into questions
  • What should I learn from this section?
  • What will the exam ask about this?

  • **Read:** Read with purpose

  • Try to answer your questions as you read
  • Highlight sparingly (only key concepts)
  • Take notes of important points

  • **Recite:** Explain in your own words

  • Close the book and summarize what you read
  • Answer the questions you created
  • Use flashcards or notes to test yourself

  • **Review:** Reinforce learning

  • Go back and review your notes
  • Answer questions again from memory
  • Space out reviews over several days

  • Time Investment

Initial SQ3R reading takes longer than passive reading (perhaps 2x). But the improved retention means you study less overall before exams.

    Results

Students using SQ3R see test score improvements of 15-25% compared to passive reading.
